Great places to see fossils in person - not dioramas or kids' interactive wingydoodles - just fossils. I only list them if I've actually been there and found them worthy of your time and money.

In a league of their own

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

American Museum of Natural History

Yale Peabody Museum

Smaller but great

Wyoming Dinosaur Center – All sorts of amazing fossils.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science – Dinos, Marine Reptiles, Mammals, and more.

Page Museum La Brea – The working tarpit is spectacularly unimpressive, but if you are into Ice Age animals, go no further.

Nebraska State Museum – Tertiary mammals galore, and Elephant Hall is the Valhalla of Proboscidea

South Dakota School of Mines – Cretaceous sea and land monsters and Oligocene Badland critters.

Tate Museum of Geology – A small museum filled with great stuff.

Black Hills Institute – Dinos galore, but imho, the real gem is Pete's sabercat skull from South America

Ashfall Fossil Beds – The rhino barn is unreal – all in situ

The Mammoth Site – Also in situ and worth a visit.

Buffalo Museum of Science – A surprising little treat.
